The Czech Development Cooperation
Despite the fact that the Czech Republic is ranked among the so called emerging donors, Czech development cooperation has a long tradition in Ethiopia. The Czech Republic has had a significant presence in Ethiopia since 2001, providing assistance especially in education and water management and, to a lesser degree, in agriculture and social development.
Projects focusing on hydro-geological mapping of various Ethiopian regions, sustainable management of water resources and improvement of quality of education through introduction of modern teaching methods are some of the most successfully accomplished.
In May 2010, the Czech Government declared Ethiopia as the only African country among the five priority countries of the Czech Official Development Cooperation (Ethiopia standing together with Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova and Mongolia). Subsequently, a Memorandum of Understanding on Development Cooperation between Ministry of Finance and Economic Development of Ethiopia and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic was signed on October 4, 2011. A bilateral Development Cooperation Programme for the period 2012-2017 was established determining priority sectors as health, education, water supply and sanitation, agriculture, forestry and fishing and disaster prevention and preparedness. The Czech Development Cooperation with Ethiopia is mostly concentrated in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People´s Region (SNNPR).
The Czech Republic Development Cooperation is carried out among others through of the following instruments:
