Information for Foreigners on Visas Permitting the Stay over 90 Days

The Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic is the sole authority to approve the entry of aliens into the territory of the Czech Republic. You can obtain useful information regarding obligatory requirements for foreigners on the Internet – www.mvcr.cz (the official website of the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic in several language versions).

The Aliens Act (No. 326/1999, on the Residence of Aliens in the Territory of the Czech Republic) regulates both the long-term visa approval process as well as the issuance of long-term residence permits. According to this legal act the visa procedure and the conditions of stay are a joint responsibility of the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. You can find a full text of this act in English in the Act 326/1999 Coll. (Act on the Residence of Foreign Nationals).

Czech Embassies and Consulates are fully competent to process applications for short-term visas. They can by themselves decide on Airport Transit Visas, or Visas Permitting the Stay up to 90 Days (90 days and less).

The Czech Ministry of Interior reviews applications for long-term visas (visas for the stay over 90 days) as well as long-term residence and permanent residence permits.

A foreigner that intends to stay in the Czech Republic due to his given reasons for more than 3 months has to apply for a Visa Permitting Stay Over 90 Days.

Application forms for long-term visas (which are available at Czech Embassies and Consulates) as well as the other supporting documents have to be submitted in person by the applicant at Czech Embassies.

There is a fee for submitting a visa application. Children under the age of 6 years are exempted from paying the fee.

Following their submission, a complete application form for a long-term visa as well as all relevant supporting documents are sent to the Czech Republic by the Embassy. The decission taken by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic (approval/refusal) is transmitted back to the Embassy. The Embassy in turn informs the applicant about the results and in case of approval issues a requested visa into applicant's passport.

Prior to the issuance of a requested visa, the applicant is obliged to present a valid travel medical insurance that will cover his/her whole intended stay in the Czech Republic. The Embassy has no right to revoke the decision of the Czech Ministry of Interior.

A refusal to issue a visa may be appealed.
