(This article expired 31.12.2013.)

The Department of English and American Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes for international students taught in English.

At the Department of English and American Studies at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University, the degree programs have been carefully crafted to provide an education that is structured but also full of intellectual challenge.  Whether students are pursuing BA, MA or PhD degrees, they take compulsory courses in the field and its fundamentals that provide a solid basis for independent research.  After fulfilling these requirements, students choose from a wide range of elected courses offered by a large and diverse faculty.

Elective courses enable students to develop their own focus on one of four fields of literature studies concentration—British and Irish Literatures, North American Literatures, Australian and New Zealand, or on linguistic topics ranging from functional syntax, semantics, pragmatics, stylistics, and sociolinguistics, applying methods of text linguistics, contrastive text linguistics, and discourse analysis.  Cultural Studies are yet another optional focus.

All programs offer solid linguistic competence in English and a broad familiarity with the literature and cultural history of the UK and the USA, Canada and/or Australia and/or a thorough knowledge of English linguistics. Throughout the process of writing the BA thesis, MA thesis or doctoral dissertation, students work closely with a personal faculty supervisor who oversees and critiques their project as it develops.

„A recognized diploma prepares graduates for flexible career paths.  Our Alumni achieve success in education, translation, business, journalism, diplomacy and the arts.  In cases deserving special attention, a scholarship may be given to applicants up to the annual fee,” Jeffrey A. Vanderziel, Head of the Department, commented.
