On March 23rd 2013, the Czech-Chinese consortium SKE opened its production line for vehicle traction units in Suzhou, Jiangsu province.
SKE, which consists of the Czech Skoda Electric and the Chinese company Kingway Transportation Jiangsu, has won a tender to supply traction equipment for 23 five-car metro units, worth over 25 million USD.
H.E. Libor Sečka, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in China, as well as number of provincial dignitaries, took part in the opening ceremony. While visiting Jiangsu province, Ambassador Sečka met Mr. Jiang Hongkun, Secretary General of the Chinese Communist Party in Suzhou. After both representatives mutually expressed their strong support for the development of the joint Czech Chinese project by SKE, they exchanged their views on future cooperation in other fields.
Ambassador Sečka also met Mr. Zhang, deputy Mayor of Suzhou. They discussed topics of mutual interest, concentrating primarily on possibilities of creation of a “sister-city partnership” between Suzhou and one of the Czech regional capitals.
Suzhou already has a flourishing partnership with Venice, Italy. In the Czech Republic they would like to find a partner city with strong industrial and economic background. Suzhou is predominantly famous for its magnificent ancient gardens. But, especially for aficionados of architecture it might be worth mentioning that one of the most admired buildings in all China - Suzhou Crown Plaza Hotel, shaped as a ship entering a lake - was created by famous Czech architect Jan Benda.
