At the end of December, Prague Philharmonia departed Prague for an unprecedented 12-day concert tour of China and an unusual New Year celebration in this far-away country.
As part of its musical debut in this Asian power, the Philharmonia introduced in its seven-concert series under the leadership of conductor Ondřej Vrabec the immortal musical treasures of pre-eminent Czech composers – Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček. The Philharmonia made its stops between 29 December 2012 and 6 January 2013 in the following cities: Fuling, Xining, Lanzhou, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Tianjin and Beijing. The performances were welcomed very warmly by the Chinese public. For example, at the end of the Philharmonia’s concert in Beijing’s National Centre for Performing Arts, the audience requested – through its thunderous applause – not just one, but two encores.
