Ambassador Jiří Šitler attends events marking 70 years since pogrom in Iasi

On 27 – 28 June 2011 the Ambassador together with the Vice-President of the International Auschwitz Committee Prof. Dr. Felix Kolmer attended commemoration ceremonies at the invitation of the Elie Wiesel Institute in remembrance of the victims of pogrom and so-called death trains in Iasi.
Over 13,000 Jews were killed there 70 years ago by the Romanian regime of General Antonescu, an ally of Hitlerite Germany. The Ambassador laid a bouquet of flowers at the memorial by the mass grave of the so-called death trains victims in Podu Iloaiei near Iasi.
In Iasi, the Ambassador also met with the Prefect of Iasi County Dragomir Sava Tomaseschi, Deputy Mayor of the city Romeo Olteanu and with Romanian members of the Czech-Romanian commission of historians.
