Festival of the Czech minority in Banat

On 21- 24 August 2013, Ambassador Jiří Šitler visited localities inhabited by the Czech minority in Caraş-Severin and Mehedinţi counties.

In the villages of Sumiţa (Lăpuşnicel commune), Liubcova (Berzasca commune) and Eibenthal (Dubova commune) he met with the representatives of the Democratic Union of Slovaks and Czechs in Romania (UDSCR), representatives of the local administration as well as with the local priest, Dean Václav Mašek, and discussed with them the situation and the needs of the Czech community in Banat. The UDSCR representatives thanked the Czech state for the support of their cultural events and of Czech schooling in the region as well as for the   Ecotourism Development Project in Romanian Banat.

On 22 August, the Ambassador opened the Banat Festival in Baia Nouă near Eibenthal, with more than 20 bands from the Czech Republic taking part, and the festival of the Czech minority in Banat concurrently organized at the same place, with the folk ensembles from Eibenthal, Gârnic, Sfânta Elena and from the village of Češko Selo in the Serbian part of Banat. The event was attended also by some 600 tourists from the Czech Republic.
