80 years of Czech language and literature at University of Bucharest

Ambassador Jiří Šitler attended on Friday 03.10.2014 the Slavonic Culture Days in Romania opening at the University of Bucharest, where the festive symposium in honor of 80 years of Czech language and literature was also held.

Czech language teaching started in Bucharest in 1934. University of Bucharest dean of the faculty Prof. Liviu Franga, top Romanian Czech scholars and Czech language and literature students were present at the symposium. Czech language is being taught at present at the local Faculty of Foreign Language and Literatures and there is still a solid interest for Czech language. Many graduates in the field had successful careers in pedagogy, translation and interpretation, literature, diplomacy and public administration. Ambassador in his speech thanked the present Czech scholars for keeping the Czech-Romanian friendship tradition and reminded from the Czech Studies point of view of the important Cartea Cehă project of Czech literature in Romanian translations at the Curtea Veche Publishing. Ambassador also informed the audience that Czech Republic will be the main guest of Boofest book fair in the spring of 2015 and that the Parliament of Romania adopted during the past days the law on the establishment of the Czech Language Day, that it will be celebrated on 28 September.
