The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland in his speech to the Committee of Ministers presented his views on possible cooperation with the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) in the field of human rights.
Cooperation between FIFA and the Council of Europe could be a crucial step for a world-wide implementation of the European Convention on spectator violence and misbehavior. This convention could thanks to FIFA gain greater publicity. Specifically, it would provide national football associations with means and funding for dealing with spectator violence during sports events. Mutual cooperation could also contribute to creation of the Convention against manipulation of sport results.
After his meeting with the President of FIFA on November 4th, Jagland spoke highly about the cooperation with FIFA. Jagland expressed his support for FIFA’s project Hanshake for Peace, which aims at lowering violence in sports. The project should launch together with the Football Championship in Brazil in 2014. The Council of Europe may also send its expert observers to participate in this project.
