Czech Christmas traditions in New York

(This article expired 13.12.2016 / 00:15.)

On Sunday, December 13 the Czech National Building was hosting a daylong event commemorating Czech Christmas customs and traditions in which were introduced Czech firms and products. This was a three-part project in cooperation of the Consulate General, Czech Center and Dvorak's American society (DAHA).

The program included afternoon matinee with renowned American musicologist Michael Beckermann from NYU, the Czech Christmas Carols and songs presented by Czech mezzo-soprano Pavlina Horakova and also the children from the Czech and Slovak schools in Astoria. Most popular part of the event were the interactive “hands-on projects which included cutting Christmas stars and chains, poured the wax, decorate gingerbread and probably the greatest interest and popularity were floating nutshells with lighted candles.

A small Christmas market also took a place throughout the day on the roof of BNH, where the main attractions were Czech glass Christmas ornaments offered by Glassor firm and artistic jewelry of the Czech firm Antipearle and also a number of traditional Czech Christmas delicacies, which were offered  by the New York’s shop Czech & Slovak Varieties.

Due to a great interest it would be good to hold a similar event next year.
