Czech Nanotechnologies Exhibitioned in the USA

(This article expired 02.11.2017 / 15:00.)

A delegation of representatives from Czech companies and academic institutions visited the East Coast of the United States between the 25th and 28th of October, 2016, to present Czech nanotechnologies, which are among leading competitors globally, particularly in the field of nanofibers, to potential business partners, as well as elite local research institutions, including the famous Boston MIT.

The delegation of Czech nanotechnological companies, called the Czech Nano Show 2016 and led by Jiři Kůs, President of the Czech Nanotechnology Industries Association, consisted of representatives from Contipro, Contipro, IQ Structures, Nafigate, and nanoSPACE, as well as a representative from the Nanoprogres cluster. The research portion of the delegation was represented by members of the Brno-based CEITEC Institute.

The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in New York, along with the CzechInvest agency, organized two seminars (one in New York and one in Boston), where Czech participants had the opportunity to present their products to potential partners. Representatives of the Consulate General seminars featured at both seminars, as did, as did Czechinvest representative Jiři Fusek, the agency’s sector manager for nanotechnology, who detailed Czechinvest’s involvement in the field. Subsequently, Jiři Kůs, president of the Czech Nanotechnology Industries Association, introduced the history and accomplishments of the Czech Republic in the field of nanotechnology, followed by the individual companies’ presentations. The highly innovative Czech Nanotechnology cluster, Nanoprogres, then presented not only their achievements in the field of collective research and development, but the politics of European and Czech clusters, the national cluster association, and the importance of strategic European partnerships, namely “AdPack”, which Nanoprogress notably co-founded.

At the opening of the New York seminar, Martin Dvořák, Consul General of the Czech Republic, said: "I am very happy that we can be here today in the Bohemian National Hall, presenting Czech companies and institutions from a field in which the Czech Republic is a major player. I firmly believe that this nanotechnology mission will contribute to convincing key partners in the US of this fact."

In addition to the two workshops, the Consulate General and CzechInvest also organized for the delegation to visit the CUNY Advanced Science Research Centre), where they were received by the Deputy Director of ASRC and, after a discussion, toured some of the research facilities within this new center.  In Boston, after meeting the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic and Boston University professor Igor Lukes, the group had the opportunity to meet with Edward Damiano, a professor of biotechnology at the Faculty of Engineering at Boston University, with whom they discussed the possibility of obtaining investments in science and research, among other things. The last stop which the participants of the nanotechnology mission visited was the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where a separate department for nanotechnology research, MIT.nano, is developing.

Project Czech Nano Show 2016 helped to underline the fact that the Czech Republic is, particularly in the field of nanofibers, at the global forefront in its research, and is in many ways even ahead of renowned US universities and research institutions. In regards to cooperation, through the exchange of experience between research institutions, which has the potential to subsequently develop into cooperation during the introduction of new technologies into practice, there exists considerable potential between the US and the Czech Republic.

Karel Smékal, trade diplomat, General Consulate in New York
