Presentation of Václav Havel on the People´s Meeting on Bornholm

14-17 June 2012 the highest representatives of the Danish political scene participated in the People´s Meeting (Folkemødet), in the town of Allinge in the north-east of the Danish island Bornholm.

The event, inspired by a similar meeting on the Swedish island Gotland, took place for the first time last year at the suggestion of a veteran in Danish politics, Bertel Haarder. His credentials include multiple tenure as a minister, member of the European Parliament and he is currently 1st deputy-chairman of the Folketing.

More than 25 thousand interested people took part in this second year of the People´s Meeting. They had an opportunity to choose among many activities ranging from participating in political discussions, watching documentary movies, listening to presentations by different associations and organisations to consuming grilled food and draft beer.

During the four days the citizens could ask questions to the Danish prime minister, most of the ministers and Folketing members. Participating in the People´s Meeting was so important to the political representatives that they managed to attend the event as well as being present at the state visit of the Chinese president which was happening at the same time.

The Czech Embassy in the cooperation with Danish daily Politiken arranged a screening of the documentary movie Citizen Havel which was introduced by Ambassador Zdeněk Lyčka. At the same time the town library in Rønne, the capital of Bornholm situated aprox. 25 km from Allinge, presented the exhibition Václav Havel 1968-2003 by the three Czech photographers – Oldřich Škácha, Karel Cudlín and Alan Pajer. The exhibition was shown for the first time at the occasion of the celebration of Václav Havel´s 75th birthday in the Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague 1 October 2011. Since April 2012 the photo exhibition has been travelling around Denmark. Bornholm is its third stop after Aalborg University and the Langeland Library. The exhibition will continue its journey to the library in Nexø – the second biggest town on Bornholm, then in September to the Royal library in Copenhagen, in October to Copenhagen´s quarter Ballerup (the Twin City of Praha 10) and finally in December to the library in Skive in northwest Jutland.
