Surprising associations can be found between beekeeping and wildlife conservancy. One of our recent small development projects reflects this.
The Sebakwe Community in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe is eagerly looking forward to the benefits accrued from the bee keeping project, which with the assistance of the Czech Republic was successfully implemented in 2012.
Overnight the villagers have become guardians against veld fires which used to threaten the adjacent conservancy, since any veld fire risks destroying their treasured bee hives.
The ultimate goal is for the villagers to have another source of income by selling the harvested honey to nearby towns. The hope being that this will discourage their poaching in the adjacent conservancy, reduce the risks of veld fires and help in conserving endangered species and preserving the ecosystem.
To show their appreciation of the Czech Republic’s support the Sebakwe community has proudly put a Czech Development Logo by the entrance to the bee hive area.
