A lecture of Director of The Drama Club Prague in Helsinki

The Embassy of the Czech Republic together with Rikhardinkatu Library in Helsinki organized a lecture “Forty nine seasons of the Drama Club in connections with Czechoslovak and Czech theatre”. Artistic manager and Director of the Drama Club Mr. Vladimír Procházka was as a guest.
The lecture was a second one in a planned serial of lectures on Czech theatres (the first lecture given by Director of Laterna Magika was in September 2013). The contents of the lecture was not only the history of the Drama Club but also the principles of forming the Drama Club as a heritage of democratic non-totalitarian thinking. The listeners were excited by excerpts from the plays of the Drama Club among which there were e.g. N. Machiavelli – The Mandrake, E. O´Neill – A Long Day´s Journey into Night, N. V. Gogol – The Gamblers, L. Smoček – Dr. Burke's Strange Afternoon, B. Hrabal – The Gentle Barbarian, M. McDonagh – The Lonesome West, M. Kundera – The Blunder.
After graduating in history and theory of theatre and history and theory of film at the Faculty of Arts in the Charles University in Prague he started to work as a lector in the State Theatre Studio in 1976. From 1978 to 1994 he was a dramaturge in the Drama Club. In 1992 he was a co-founder of bi-weekly Theatre News, where he was in charge of theatre critics. In 1997 he was elected by critics´ community a chairman of the Czech centre of International Association of Theatre Critics (AICT). After a competition announced by the City of Prague in 1999 he became a director and artistic manager of the Drama Club which has been transformed under his leadership into a generally beneficial company.
