European Film Weeks in Helsinki 18 April – 4 May 2013

The topics of European Film Weeks are influenced by “European Year of Citizens in the EU". This year´s event is again organized by the European Commission Representation in Finland and the European Parliament Information Office in Finland, in cooperation with Embassies and cultural institutes of EU member states and candidate countries. The Czech Republic is represented by the film Sunday League - Pepik Hnatek’s Last Stand directed by Jan Prušinovský. Ondřej Vetchý in minor role won the Czech Lion Award.

Director Lukáš Kokeš was a guest at Helsinki Film Festival DocPoint

During January 22 – 27, 2013 the 12th Documentary Film Festival (DocPoint) took place in Helsinki (Kinopalatsi 9). Among many projections there was also a Czech film “Fortress” by Klára Tasovská and Lukáš Kokeš. Screenings of the film went on 24 January (3 p.m.) and 26 January (4 p.m.). The director Lukáš Kokeš was present at the screening 24 January and after that he answered questions from the public. This film won a prize in the Czech competition at Jihlava International Festival (October 2012) and it took part in the prestigious Documentary Film Festival in Copenhagen (November 2012). Also the film “Private Universe” by Helena Třeštíková was shown at the festival (22 January at 6 p.m.).

Czech literary evening

On 10th June a Czech literary evening was held in restaurant Vltava in Helsinki. The event was organized together with the Finnish PEN, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki and an expatriate association Bohemia.

Finnish Opera is preparing a performance of Janáček´s and Čapek´s The Makropulos Case

As one of the highlights of this year’s opera season in Helsinki will undoubtedly be a performance of the famous opera The Makropulos Case by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček, based on less famous theatre play by one of the most significant Czech play writers of the 20th century Karel Čapek.

Exhibition of the Czech academic painter Petr Rehor in Oulu

An exhibition of the Czech academic painter Petr Rehor took place in the gallery Valvegalleria in Oulu between 7th through 29th January 2012. At the occasion of the exhibition Kaleva daily paper published an interview with P. Rehor on 7th January 2012.

Chairman of Suomen PEN Jarkko Tontti met the Ambassador

On 26th May the Ambassador met the chairman of Suomen PEN Club Mr. Jarkko Tontti. At the Embassy they discussed common projects, the position of Czech literature in Finland and translation of Czech books into the Finnish language.

Festival of documentary films DocPoints

On January 25th through 30th, 2011 a festival of documentary films DocPoints took place in Helsinki. The Czech Republic was presented by one of the most renowned film directors of recent times, Ms Helena Třeštíková. Her film KATKA was screened twice; the Tallinn festival presented her two other films MARCELA and RENÉ
