European Film Weeks in Helsinki 18 April – 4 May 2013

The topics of European Film Weeks are influenced by “European Year of Citizens in the EU". This year´s event is again organized by the European Commission Representation in Finland and the European Parliament Information Office in Finland, in cooperation with Embassies and cultural institutes of EU member states and candidate countries. The Czech Republic is represented by the film Sunday League - Pepik Hnatek’s Last Stand directed by Jan Prušinovský. Ondřej Vetchý in minor role won the Czech Lion Award.

Czech School Without Borders

Czech School Without Borders organizes a summer camp for children in the Czech Republic from 28th July to 4th August 2013. The summer camp takes place in an ecological center of the city of Olomouc – Sluňákov and it is a unique opportunity for children of the Czech origin living abroad to improve their knowledge of the Czech language, to make new friends (who come from different parts of the world and speak Czech!), to learn new games, art techniques, songs, poems, fairy-tales and everything that belongs to a summer camp. The deadline for applications is 30th April 2013. The camp is for children aged from 6 to 15 years.

Czech Music Camp for Youth

For 17th time the Czech Music Camp for Youth will take place at Horní Jelení in the region of Pardubice in the Czech Republic from July 18 to August 3, 2013. Over 200 children and young people aged between 8 and 19 years will participate in this event that promotes the idea of international understanding by a language of music.

Director Lukáš Kokeš was a guest at Helsinki Film Festival DocPoint

During January 22 – 27, 2013 the 12th Documentary Film Festival (DocPoint) took place in Helsinki (Kinopalatsi 9). Among many projections there was also a Czech film “Fortress” by Klára Tasovská and Lukáš Kokeš. Screenings of the film went on 24 January (3 p.m.) and 26 January (4 p.m.). The director Lukáš Kokeš was present at the screening 24 January and after that he answered questions from the public. This film won a prize in the Czech competition at Jihlava International Festival (October 2012) and it took part in the prestigious Documentary Film Festival in Copenhagen (November 2012). Also the film “Private Universe” by Helena Třeštíková was shown at the festival (22 January at 6 p.m.).

Czech literary evening

On 10th June a Czech literary evening was held in restaurant Vltava in Helsinki. The event was organized together with the Finnish PEN, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki and an expatriate association Bohemia.

Finnish Opera is preparing a performance of Janáček´s and Čapek´s The Makropulos Case

As one of the highlights of this year’s opera season in Helsinki will undoubtedly be a performance of the famous opera The Makropulos Case by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček, based on less famous theatre play by one of the most significant Czech play writers of the 20th century Karel Čapek.

Czechs in Finland

The Czech community in Finland is organized in several compatriot organizations. The Finnish-Czech society and the Bohemia society gather friends of the Czech Republic, while the unorganized group of Czechs studying and living around Finland meets and shares information on the website Finčech.

Chairman of Suomen PEN Jarkko Tontti met the Ambassador

Festival of documentary films DocPoints
