Czech literary evening

On 10th June a Czech literary evening was held in restaurant Vltava in Helsinki. The event was organized together with the Finnish PEN, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Helsinki and an expatriate association Bohemia.

Czech literature was represented by Jiří Dědeček, Chairman of the Czech PEN, a poet, song writer and translator, and Markéta Hejkalová, who is known in Finland not only as a translator and promoter of Finnish literature in the Czech Republic but also as a writer. On behalf on Finnish PEN the Chairman Jarkko Tontti, a poet and writer, as well as members of the Executive Committee of the Finnish PEN Marianne Bargum and Tiina Lehtoranta were present.During the evening program Finnish translations of J. Dědeček´s poems and fragments from M. Hejkalová´s last novel A Magician from Peking (Kouzelník z Pekingu) were presented. Translations from literary works of both authors were prepared by Finnish Bohemists Jari Aula and Sampo Saari (Charman of Bohemia Association) who also read all the texts in Finnish during the event.Besides the author readings and readings of the translations from the works of both authors there were discussions about translation work and current situation of literature of both countries on Finnish, respectively Czech markets.
