EG: Alex Suomi’s graphic exhibition

(This article expired 31.10.2023.)

Embassy Gallery project continued at the Czech Embassy in Helsinki by the opening of Alex Suomi’s graphic exhibition "Black & White" on 17th October 2013.

Alex Suomi is a young fine arts artist who graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Lahti. During his studies he also spent one year as an exchange student in St. Petersburg in Russia. Strong points of his work are the art of drawing and composition control. From the beginning he was interested in cartoons, history and society. There are influences of expressionistic art in his drawings and black & white graphics. He always shows faces and figures in the context of life, in historical space. While studying in Russia he was inspired with Russian early avant-garde, the art of Tatlin and Malevich. The sociality and noble spirituality of the Russian avant-garde combined with rational construction left indelible influence on the young artist whose attitude towards the artist´s work and position can be described as optimistic enthusiasm. Alex Suomi avoids modern trends and in his art he tries to be honest to his own views. The exhibition Black & White presents graphic works with their simplicity and vigour of linocut and woodcut which remind the art of the Germans Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirschner. Immediacy and straightness of the message connect the works of Alex Suomi with a tradition where the artist´s works have also other than an aesthetic value.
