(This article expired 02.12.2014.)

Pictures by six Singaporean students were selected for an award at an art exhibition and competition held every year in the Czech Republic. The successful young artists of Singapore received their awards from Ambassador Tomáš Smetánka at the Czech National Day celebration on 30th October.

The young artists sent their artwork to the contest and exhibition featuring the theme Traditions and Heritage of My Country’s People. The international jury assigned to six of them an honourable mention and the Si Ling Secondary School in Singapore has been awarded a medal for the collection of graphic art.

The annual Lidice competition and exhibition, named after a village razed during World War II, has been organized since the end of the 1960s. This year, altogether 24 593 pieces of children's art from 68 countries have been presented to the jury and 1,343 of them won prizes. The 41st edition of Lidice exhibited artworks featuring traditional crafts, ceremonies, customs and folk creativity. The pictures brought to life individual figures as well as whole parades, masks, national and regional myths and legends, historical and fairy-tale characters.

Students and art schools in Singapore are invited to participate in the upcoming 42nd International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Art Lidice 2014. Its theme is Family Farming, or Our Garden and Field, as 2014 has been declared the International Year of Family Farming by the United Nations. Detailed information for young artists and their teachers can be found at the web page of the Lidice Exhibition.

The Lidice competition and exhibition is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Czech Commission for UNESCO. It was established to commemorate child victims from the village of Lidice near Prague and all other children who have died or suffered in wars.
