Diplomatic salon with Magdaléna Vašáryová „Women in diplomacy“

The 4th Diplomatic salon took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 8th 2013 with Mrs. Magdaléna Vašáryová, the former Ambassador of Czechoslovakia to Austria and the former Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Poland.

Mrs. Vašáryová talked about "Women in Diplomacy" drawing on her own practical experience from previous ambassadorial posts and work in Slovak domestic politics. She was the second female Czechoslovak ambassador and the first woman to head a Slovak embassy. Mrs. Vašáryová noted that while modern diplomacy is more open and allows women to occupy leading positions, gender-specific barriers and limits still exist. According to the ambassador, the principal asset of female diplomats is their ability to reach consensus. It was the absence of consensus in foreign policy of the Slovak Republic that led Mrs. Vašáryová to the founding of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association.

Diplomatic salons organized by the Department of Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Student Association "Junior Diplomat Initiative" give students of the University of Economics in Prague an opportunity to meet with key players in Czech foreign policy and diplomacy.
