The Agora Central Europe civic association was founded in 1998 with the aim of helping to enhance communication between local governments, central government bodies and citizens.
Agora’s general mission is to support democratic processes with the following objectives: (1.) to enhance communication and co-operation between citizens and town halls, (2.) to expand the possibility of town halls to openly plan and decide on issues with citizens taking part, (3.) to arouse the interest of citizens in community issues, (4.) to back the development of local democracy in the Czech Republic, (5.) to help enhance political culture in the Czech Republic.
Agora CE is intensively engaged in transferring its knowledge and experience of participation processes to other countries. Since 2004, it has worked for example in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia and Jordan.
In most cases, experts from Agora CE cooperate with partner organizations on their participation projects. They undertake both the organization and leadership of seminars, and the provision of consulting on individual projects.
In cooperation with the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Agora CE manages its own foreign projects within the Transition Promotion Program. In 2007 Agora CE conducted a large project - Building partnerships on the local level - in Serbia. Subsequently, it conducted common projects in both Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 2008 Agora CE has expanded its scope to Georgia where it has implemented several successful projects, and most recently also to Moldova.
