Civic alternative for Belarusian schools

Association for International Affairs (AMO), 2009

With the support of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Association for International Affairs (AMO) has implemented a project entitled “Civic alternative for Belarusian schools”, which follows up freely on another project entitled “European alternative for Belarusian schools”.

The project’s goal is to make it possible for Belarusian teachers to become acquainted with methods in the area of civic education and to support the mutual exchange of ideas and experience between Czech and Belarusian teachers.

In recent years, we have placed particular emphasis on support and cooperation with specific active teachers. In 2009, we focused on cooperating with the prominent nonprofit organization Center for the Education of Teachers and initiated cooperation with representatives of state administration involved with the issue of education.

In cooperation with Belarusian partners, an instructional DVD was produced containing films and spots on civic education and supplemented with a methodological handbook for teachers. The methodological handbook emerged as a result of a visit by Belarusian teachers and methodologists to the Czech Republic, where an intensive training program had been prepared on the use of film in instruction. A seminar on the issue of using films was organized for Belarusian teachers in Minsk and led by Belarusian trainers and a Czech expert.

In addition, a study visit was organized for representatives of state institutions involved in education. A program was prepared focusing on various forms of cooperation between nonprofit organizations and schools, meetings with leading experts on education and interesting projects being pursued by Czech nonprofits.

AMO also supports establishing contacts between Czech and Belarusian teachers. In 2009, 40 Belarusian teachers were able to visit the Czech Republic and Czech teachers visited Minsk as well, where they presented at a seminar intended for the broad pedagogical public.

However, AMO is also continuing with its previous activities focusing on supporting specific teachers – a total of 6 mini-grants were awarded for projects on extracurricular educational activities, and support was provided for the “What I know about Europe” competition, organized by our partner organization for the fourth year now. The project was supported by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the amount of CZK 1 071 701.
