Burma Projects of People in Need

 

People in Need, 2007

Period: January 2007 – December 2007

People in Need's Burma project’s main aim has been to support the underground civil society groups that manage to exist in spite of the fact that their country is ruled by one of most repressive regimes in the world.  There are a significant number of exiled Burmese civil society organisations based on the Thai-Burma border that provide assistance and support for people inside Burma and members of the refugee communities in Thailand. They are involved in monitoring ongoing human rights violations and maintaining communication with Burma’s internal peaceful, pro-democracy opposition movement. They have continued to call upon the international community to help resolve the current situation in Burma.

In 2007, the project focused on two key objectives:

  1. Provide direct assistance to families of political prisoners and to activists both in Burma and Thailand
  2. To inform the international community about the situation in Burma on a continuous basis to encourage more decisive support for Burma’s pro-democracy movement.

 Implemented activities:

 A: Direct assistance to families of political prisoners and to activists in Burma and Thailand

  1. Seminars on the Czech experience of transitioning to democracy in Thailand
  2. Support of radio and TV station Democratic Voice of Burma
  3. Financial and humanitaran assistance to families of Burmese political prisoners
  4. Support of an educational project in Burma and other social initiatives
  5. Internships for Burmese activists in the Czech Republic
  6. Journey to Thailand and Burma
  7. Immediate assistance to Burmese pro-democracy movement and activists in reaction to the government’s crackdown of peaceful demonstrations in September.

B: International lobbying in support of democracy in Burma

  1. Visit of Burmese activist Hseng Noung in Prague
  2. Participation of Burmese activists at the seminar on reform of security apparatus
  3. Raising awareness on situation in Burma in other EU countries
  4. Meeting of Euro-Burma Network and Burma Donors Forum
  5. Seminar on Burma in Czech parliament
  6. Other campaigns designed to increase public awareness about situation in Burma

Achieved outputs:

A: Direct assistance to families of political prisoners and to activists in Burma and Thailand

  • Three seminars on the the Czech experience of transitioning to democracy were held in Thailand (107 participants);
  • Five meetings with Czech experts for Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) representatives, organizing a Czech TV expert’s trip to DVB headquarters as well as numerous interviews;
  • Financial assistance to families of Burmese political prisoners in total amount of 10.000 USD was handed over through Assistance Association for Political Prisoners;
  • Several educational and social initiatives in Burma were financially supported;
  • Three-month internships for five Burmese activists were organised in the Czech Republic;
  • Immediate financial assistance in reaction to the suppression of demonstrations in total value of 1.000.000 CZK was handed over to four leading exiled Burmese organisations.

B: International lobbying in support of democracy in Burma

  • A public debates and meeting were organised at MFA for Burmese activist Hseng Noung;
  • Participation of two activists – Khin Ohmar and Aung Thu Nyen – at the seminar on reforming of security apparatus in Prague was organised;
  • Lobbying trips to six EU countries (Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Denmark and Norway) were organised;
  • A meeting of Euro-Burma Network along with meeting of Burma Donors Forum were organised in Prague;
  • A parliamentary seminar “Burma Alert: Action Needed Now” was organised;
  • Three public events in reaction to the suppression of demonstrations were organised;
  • A petition was created and signed by 150 persons calling upon China to assist in resolving the situation in BUrma.
