The project ‘Fostering Transparency and Communication in Georgia’ was a common project of four non-governmental organizations; Agora Central Europe, People in need, Transition Online and the Education Centre for Public Administration. The target groups for our area of the project were mainly young students from the regions Guria and Kvemo kartli, as well as local journalists. For the students we prepared, for the second year running and as a follow up from the successful pilot year, the debating competition ‘On the Way to Parliament’, in coalition with our Georgian partner organization ‘Civitas Georgica’. The competition increased in popularity in the region, and we were able to recruit 16 schools to participate in the project. The competition is very popular both amongst students and teachers, and the debating methods are also used in the ordinary classroom. As well as the competition, students were also given the opportunity to participate in pre-election debates with candidates for local representatives.
For regional journalists, we prepared a programme focusing on a critical approach to future politicians, namely candidates for political representatives. During a seminar led by Czech experts, the basic principles of public debates and moderating them were presented to the journalists. Some of these journalists had the opportunity to practice the skills gained during the seminar in debates with candidates for local elections. As a follow up activity, a study tour to the Czech Republic was organized, where four Georgian journalists were able to gain detailed knowledge of Czech media as well as attend a public debate organized by Agora CE. They then shared their experiences from the study tour with their colleagues during a series of meetings in Western Georgia. The project contributed to a more open communication about public matters on a local level.
