The common project „Strengthening Capacity and Sustainability of Serbian NGOs“ realized by The Via Foundation, Prague and The Balkan Community Initiatives Fund (BCIF), Belgrade from May 2008 until December 2009 continued in our previous cooperation in the areas promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) and strengthening the capacity of Serbian NGOs.

The project had 3 main goals:

1)    Strengthening Capacity and Sustainability of Serbian NGOs

2)    Promotion and cultivation of corporate philanthropy of large corporations as well as of small and medium enterprises in regions

3)    Creating networking opportunities for NGOs and members of the private and public sectors

Serbian NGOs are conscious of their dependence on a small number of (usually international) donors, but it is difficult for them to break free from this dependence. The solution is a partnership with private business sector or a wide portfolio of individual donors. Thanks to motivation supplied through a challenge grant and gaining fundraising know-how through a Via-led fundraising workshop that took place in Belgrade in 2008, 10 Serbian NGOs initiated corporate and individuals fundraising programs in their communities. Six organizations reached a planned sum of 3 000€ within 12 months and BCIF matched this sum 1:1. NGOs used the money to finance new projects in their communities.  After we began assisting regional Serbian NGOs develop local fundraising programs, we discovered that big and/or international corporations in the capital city of Belgrade were not the only high potential target group for promoting CSR.

his project focused on small and medium enterprises and companies which are based outside of Belgrade.  A series of round tables named „CSRbija 2009 – Promotion of Corporate Social Responsibility“were intended to promote the issue of CSR in regions, to bring together the most important stakeholders (business, local government, NGOs), and to introduce the concept of community foundations.  Five roundtables on CSR in Novi Sad, Pirot, Paracin, Leskovac and Gornji Milanovac involved not only local enterprises, but also representatives of local governments and NGOs.
