The Deputy of Ambassador Nicol Adamcová, the assistant of the Ambassador Sandra Platts and intern Tomáš Dvořák attended the “Study in Europe Fair” organized by the European Commission and by the Durban University of Technology on 6th and 7th September. The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Pretoria has built on the previous participation on a similar fair organized by the EU Delegation in Cape Town in May 2012 and the “Study Abroad Fair” held in May this year at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. The strengthening of the Czech-South African relations in the education field is one of the long-term priorities of the Czech embassy.

The fair was also an occasion to introduce study opportunities in the EU member states –Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Netherlands, France, Finland or Spain were present, as well as the Czech Republic. The representatives of the European Commission and the EU Delegation in Pretoria described in detail programmes Erasmus+ and Erasmus Mundus Action 2 for South Africa. The participation of the representatives of the study departments of the South African universities was very beneficial. Their presence was used not only by South African students but also by the representatives of the EU member states to establish new contacts or for deepening of the already existing relations.

With regards to one of the hosts – Durban University of Technology – most of the questions were oriented towards technological education. Besides that, students showed interest in medical programmes, architecture, economics and other fields of study. South African students positively evaluated opportunities to study at Czech universities in English and affordable life expenditures in the Czech Republic.
