Firearm Instruments of Assignment (FIA)

If you intend to import a firearm into the Czech Republic, you have to obtain a Firearms Instrument of Assignment for permanent and for temporary import.

Permanent import of firearms and ammunition

Firearm Instruments of Assignment for permanent import of firearms and ammunition are issued abroad by diplomatic missions of the Czech Republic, in all other cases by the relevant police departments in the Czech Republic.

Particulars required for the issue of an FIA:

  • a completed application
  • the applicant's passport or identity card to verify the applicant's identity
  • firearms certificate, firearms licence
  • a proof of payment of an administrative fee in the amount of 500 CZK (or, if paid at the DM, in its local currency equivalent according to the applicable exchange rate)

Note:

The application must include the name of the border crossing through which the firearm or its ammunition will be imported into the Czech Republic.  

Holders of FIA for permanent import of firearms or ammunition are obliged to report the import of such firearms or ammunition for them to the relevant police department and to present to it the firearms and ammunition for control within 10 days after crossing the state border of the Czech Republic.

Transit of firearms and ammunition

FIA for transit of firearms or ammunition are issued by diplomatic missions of the Czech Republic. If you are an individual or a legal entity visiting the Czech Republic to exercise hunting rights or to participate in marksmanship competitions, the relevant FIA for transit of firearms or ammunition may be also issued by police departments at the external borders of the European Union (international airports).

Particulars required for the issue of an FIA:

  • a completed application

in case of hunting

- an officially verified invitation issued by the hunting ground user

in case of a sports event

- an officially verified invitation to the sports event

for any other purposes:

- transit

  • the passport or identity card to verify the applicant's identity
  • the firearms licence
  • a proof of payment of an administrative fee in the amount of 500 CZK (or, if paid at the DM, in its local currency equivalent according to the applicable exchange rate)

The firearm specified in an FIA for transit of firearms or ammunition or in a European Firearms Licence is not subject to registration with the competent police department.

Note:

The following persons need not have an FIA for transit of firearms or ammunition:

- hunters from Member States of the European Union for their hunting firearms and ammunition or sports shooters for their sports firearms and ammunition for them, provided that they hold a European Firearms Licence where the transited firearm is stated, and provided that they may declare the purpose of their journey, particularly by submitting an invitation;

- all other European Firearms Licence holders for firearms and ammunition for them in case of transit, if such firearms are stated in the licence and with prior consent of the relevant police department. Such consent may be granted for a period up to 1 year, shall be registered in the European Firearms Licence and may be renewed recurrently for 1 subsequent year.

Travellers from third countries travelling to a Member State of the European Union must present at the external borders of the European Union for control a permit issued by each Member State through the territory of which they wish to travel with their firearms and ammunition.

Transport of firearms or ammunition by a foreign entrepreneur (for transit purposes)

A firearms transport permit shall be issued to the foreign entrepreneur upon his application for permission of transport solely by the police presidium. The application for permission of transport may be filed directly with the police presidium or with the diplomatic mission of the Czech Republic.

Required particulars:

  • a completed application
  • a passport/ identity card to verify the applicant's identity
  • documents relating to the commercial transport of firearms
  • lists of transported firearms and ammunition
  • a proof of payment of the administrative fee

Note:

While completing the application, fill in all required particulars, namely the licence plate number of the vehicle, contact data of the transporting person (mobile, telephone, fax, radio), and the relevant time and place (the day, hour and place of commencement of transit across the territory of the Czech Republic, the expected transit period and the day, hour and place of completion of transit across the territory of the Czech Republic).
