Residence of EU citizens and nationals of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland in the territory of the Czech Republic

The general rules are provided in Act No. 326/1999 concerning the residence of aliens in the territory of the Czech Republic as amended (“Aliens Residence Act”). EU citizens and nationals of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland holding a travel document or a national ID card may reside in the territory of the Czech Republic on a temporary basis without any additional permit.

The only requirement of the Aliens Residence Act which applies to EU citizens and nationals of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland is the duty to report their presence if they expect to stay in the Czech Republic for more than 30 days. In such case, the alien must report at the local Aliens Police Inspectorate in the place where he/she resides, not later than 30 days after entering the territory of the Czech Republic.

This requirement does not apply to the following categories of aliens: children aged under 15, aliens whose presence has been reported by their accommodation provider (e.g. by a hotel), members of the staff of diplomatic missions, consular posts and international governmental organizations accredited to the Czech Republic, members of the families of such staff if registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and aliens whose accommodation is provided by the Ministry of the Interior.

EU citizens and nationals of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland who expect to stay in the territory of the Czech Republic for more than 3 months are entitled to apply for a temporary residence certificate. Details regarding the format and content of the application are provided in the Aliens Residence Act.

EU citizens and nationals of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are entitled to apply for a permanent residence permit. Details regarding the format and content of the application are provided in the Aliens Residence Act.
