Travel medical insurance

The travel medical insurance must confirm to the following requirements:

  1. coverage of costs incurred as a result of medical repatriation, emergency medical and hospital treatment, or death;
  2. coverage of up to the amount of at least 30,000 EUR;
  3. cover the entire period of your stay in the Schengen area;
  4. cover the entire territory of the Schengen area.

Applicants for a multiple Schengen (short-term) visa submit a proof of travel health insurance according to the given requirements only for the first trip. For the purposes of subsequent trips, they are required to sign a statement of understanding that they are obliged to conclude a travel health insurance for the subsequent trips.

If a Schengen (short-term) visa is issued, travel health insurance must provide coverage in all the Schengen area states. If a Schengen (short-term) visa with a limited territorial validity is issued, travel health insurance must provide coverage at least in the states for which the visa is valid.

Applicants generally conclude travel health insurance in the country of their residence. If it is not possible, they can conclude a travel health insurance in any country.

The proof of insurance may also be presented in a form of an internationally recognized credit card, the “golden card”, if it includes the medical insurance.

If proof of insurance is not submitted, visa cannot be granted.

Exemption from the travel medical insurance applies if you are:

  1. EU citizen;
  2. family member of a EU citizen;
  3. covered by health insurance under a special law;
  4. covered under an international treaty;
  5. covered by other means (such as the invitation verified by the Foreigners´ Police).

Travel medical insurance for a short-term visa can be concluded with an insurance company authorized to do so in a state, which issued your travel document, or in a state of your residence or in the Czech Republic.

Travel medical insurance for a long-term visa must be concluded with an insurance company authorized to provide insurance services in the Czech Republic.

Requirement to present travel health insurance applies also to residency checks on a territory of the Czech Republic.

Note:

Make sure that your policy is valid in the entire Schengen area if applying for a Schengen visa, is machine-filled and contains correct data about yourself, the length of stay and premium amount. Inquire whether the diplomatic mission maintains a list of insurance companies authorized to issue insurance abroad.
