Visa Information System

Starting from 11 October 2011, the Visa Information System (VIS) has been rolled out on a regional basis at diplomatic missions of the Member States of the Schengen area. For Schengen visa applicants, this means that they must provide their biometric identifiers (fingerprints) when applying for a Schengen visa.

- The currently effective Regulation (EC) No. 767/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 9 July 2008 concerning the VIS and the exchange of data between Member States on short-stay visas (VIS Regulation) provides, in its Article 48, for gradual introduction of the VIS into operation.

- The applicant must appear in person for the collection of his/her fingerprints. When the fingerprints have been collected at the time of application, the applicant does not have to provide his/her fingerprints for another 59 months when re-applying for a Schengen visa; however, he/she has to present the original visa sticker in a travel document or a copy of the visa sticker issued after the collection of fingerprints.
