Statement of Minister Karel Schwarzenberg on the situation in the Gaza Strip

(This article expired 07.01.2010.)

"I consider it unacceptable that the villages, in which civilians live, have been shelled. Therefore, Israel has an inalienable right to defend itself against such attacks. The shelling from the Hamas´s side makes it impossible to consider this organization as a partner for negotiations and to lead any political dialogue with it.

However, at the same time, it is regrettable that the living conditions in Gaza have been undignified for human life. Together with our Israeli friends we have to think how to change the conditions so that the young people would not have the need to join radical organizations. The situation can change for better only under the precondition of renewed ceasefire from both sides. Without this any dialogue is unimaginable.”
