The Presidency of the Council of the European Union summoned Iranian Chargé d´Affaires in the matter of human rights violations

 

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union summoned Iranian Chargé d´Affaires in the matter of human rights violations on 20th January 2008. On behalf of the European Union, the Presidency expressed its deep concern over the continued harassment of Shirin Ebadi, human rights activist, and her colleagues from the now officially closed Center for the Defense of Human Rights in Tehran.

The Czech Republic, on behalf of the European Union, raised also the following cases: the prosecution of Arash and Kamiar Alaei – two doctors specialising in HIV prevention; the continued persecution of journalists, bloggers and women´s rights activists in connection with the “One Million Signatures” petition, and expressed its deep concern over the possibility of another juvenile execution in the case of Behnoud Shojaee. On behalf of the European Union, the Presidency urged the Government of Iran to fully comply with its commitments under international human rights conventions, in particular under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights signed and ratified by Iran.
