Conference on the European democracy support

The Conference was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and the European Commission.

The event was opened by the speeches of Karel Schwarzenberg, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Václav Havel, Former President of the Czech Republic, who hold auspices over this conference. It brought to Prague over one hundred democracy experts from EU institutions, Member States and Non-State representatives. The conference was organized in collaboration with the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), a European platform of organizations active in democracy assistance and the Czech Association for Democracy Assistance and Human Rights (DEMAS). Democracy assistance is among the EU’s and Czech Republic’s foreign policy priorities and this is why the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs had called experts from the EU Member States and institutions like the European Commission, Secretariat of the Council of the EU and the European Parliament to discuss how individual policies and programs can be made more effective. The conference was also attended by representatives of European non-governmental organizations who presented their recommendations on democracy assistance. The voice from target countries was also presented by NGOs from countries like Russia, Armenia, Zimbabwe or Lebanon.
