Minister Kohout at ASEM Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting

 

The President of the EU Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout participates the 9th ASEM Foreign Affairs Ministers’ Meeting in Hanoi.

Jan Kohout at the press conference of ASEMThe ASEM ministerial meeting dealt with the issues concerning the future of ASEM, including possible joining of Russia and Australia. In addition to the traditional dialogue on the international issues (Afghanistan, Middle East, etc.) the meeting was focused on the political aspects of the world financial crisis and the global economic downturn. Climate change, energy security and the human rights were also among the important topics.

Ministers also discussed recent important events in the region. Besides the situation in Burma/Myanmar they particularly discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula in relation to the nuclear test of the People´s Democratic Republic of Korea. Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Kohout, the European Union and ASEM reacted immediately on the incurred situation:

On the margins of the ASEM Ministerial Meeting, Minister Jan Kohout participated in the following meetings and sessions:

I. Bilateral meetings

  • 24. 5. 2009 – meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Pham Gia Kiem.
  • 25. 5. 2009 – discussions with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand  Kasito Piromya – ministers discussed mainly about the regional issues with the emphasis on the political situation and breaching of the human rights in Barma/Myanmar.
  • 25. 5. 2009 – meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Hassan Wirajuda.

II. Multilateral meetings

  • 25. 5. 2009  EU – Burma/Myanmar Ministerial Meeting. The EU Troika was lead by the President Troika EU - Burma/Myanmarof the EU Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout. The delegation of Burma/Myanmar was lead by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nyan Win.
  • 25. 5. 2009 Visegrad Group (V4)  - Japan Meeting. The Visegrad Group delegation was lead by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski, who’s country currently presides the V4. Slovakia was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák. Japan was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Hirofumi Nakasone. The main points of discussion were the actual situation on the Korean peninsula in relation to the nuclear test done by the People´s Democratic Republic of Korea, Burma/Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
  • 25. 5. 2009 – EU Troika meeting with the Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Tan Dung.
  • 26. 5. 2009 - EU Troika meeting with China on ministerial level. EU Troika was lead by  the President of the EU Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Kohout. Minister of Foreign Affairs of  Yang Jiechi lead the Chinese delegation.
