EU – USA Negotiations on Handover of Guantanamo Prisoners to Europe

The Czech Republic, as the EU Presidency, is pleased that the Member States and the United States of America found an agreement concerning the conditions of Guantanamo prisoners´ handover to Europe.
The agreement, which has to be approved by the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the EU (GAERC) on Monday, June 15 should reflect the following basic aspects:
1. The responsibility of the USA for closing of Guantanamo and finding refuge for former prisoners
2. The way of communication between EU Member States and the USA
3. Transfer of all substantial information between EU Member States
The agreement gives support to the USA and at the same time it doesn’t oblige individual EU Member States to accept Guantanamo prisoners.
