States Parties of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court agreed on a definition of the crime of agression

After meeting of two weeks in Kampala, Uganda, the Review Conference of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court was concluded on June 11, 2010. The conference was attended by mote than 4600 representatives from more than 90 states, including non-States Parties.

A consensus in a definition of the crime of agression and procedural conditions under which the International Criminal Court can excercise jurisdiction with respect to the crime belongs to the biggest achievements of the conference. Jurisdiction against the crime of agression can be excercised by the the International Criminal Court from January 1, 2017. The International Criminal Court became the first international criminal court with authority to judge the crime of agression since the Nuremberg Trials. The joint consensus in a definition of the crime of agression and procedural conditions of excercising jurisdiction expresses a strong determination of the Sates-Parties to improve the rule of justice and procedural protection of human rights in an international level. It is one of the most important steps of the international community since adoption of the UNO Charter.
