Minister Karel Schwarzenberg in New York

 

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic returned from New York today. He accompanied President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly. Karel Schwarzenberg accomplished a number of multilateral and bilateral meetings during his stay in New York. He attended an EU-USA ministerial meeting and a following dinner held by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. A session of NATO-Russia Council and a lunch of EU foreign ministers and Russia were held in New York too.

A meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov was among the most important bilateral meetings. Karel Schwarzenberg met foreign ministers of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Kazakhstan, Botswana, Honduras, Columbia, Gruzia, Australia and Liechtenstein during his stay in New York.

During the meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Gruzia Grigol Vašadze, Minister Schwarzenberg conveyed a readiness of the Czech government to share experience of the integration process to the European Union, especially in legislative harmonization with EU standards. Minister Schwarzenberg expressed support to Gruzia in its active convergence to NATO. He appreciated involvement of Gruzia in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

The meeting of minister Schwarzenberg with Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki was focused on bilateral relations of the Czech Republic and Iran and reflection of current international development. Minister Mottaki explained several aspects of impact of sanctions imposed on Iran by international community.

The meeting of minister Schwarzenberg with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia Kevin Rudd was focused on the treaty on air services which establishes framework for possible future air traffic between the Czech Republic and Australia. Relations of both countries in air services have been uncovenanted. No airline operator provides airlinks between the Czech Republic and Australia at the moment.

An appointment of the Czech-Liechtenstein Commission of Historians was the main issue of the meeting of minister Schwarzenberg and Foreign Minister of Liechtenstein Aurelia Frick. The commission will research joint history of Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and the House of Liechtenstein as well as bilateral relations of both countries in the 20th century.
