Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense visited the Czech Provincial Reconstruction Team in Logar

 

For the first time in three years' history of the Czech Provincial Reconstruction Team in Logar province, Afghanistan Minister of Foreign Affairs Karel Schwarzenberg and Minister of Defense of the Czech Republic Alexandr Vondra jointly convinced themselves on the results of the interdepartmental working.

Both ministers visited the Czech Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) along with Ambassador of the Czech Republic to NATO Martin Povejšil, Chief of General Staff of the Army of the Czech Republic Vlastimil Pick, Senator Jiří Dienstbier and Deputy Zdeněk Boháč.

Ministers Schwarzenberg and Vondra, together with other members of the delegation headed from the Shank base to visit development projects which Czech PRT in Logar implemented. They met with the construction of a silk farm in Powraku and base and observation point of Afghan police in a strategic gorge Tandzi Wardzan, an important road which leads from the south to Kabul.

After visiting the projects, both Ministers met with civilian and military parts of the reconstruction team. Besides the discussions with military and civilian personnel, the Czech delegation also met the commander of U.S. forces in Logar Colonel James Johnson and Colonel Antonio Bruce who will succeed Colonel Johnson in his office. The main issues of the discussions were security situation in Afghanistan and the irreplaceable role of the sixth PRT Logar units within an alliance.

Czech PRT in Logar province has acted since March 2008. The civilian part consists of 11 experts from the Foreign Ministry, the military component consists of 261 members of the Army of the Czech Republic. PRT in Logar supports agriculture, security, maintenance of water resources, health, infrastructure and promotes education and independent media. Czechs has completed 131 projects in Logar.
