A common position of France and the Czech Republic on energy

On the occasion of the General Affairs Council meeting of 31 January 2011, Mr Laurent Wauquiez, French Minister for European Affairs, and Mr. Karel Schwarzenberg, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressed the proximity of positions of France and the Czech Republic on energy issues in preparation of the European Council of 4 February.

The Ministers underlined the key importance for France and the Czech Republic of carrying out an ambitious EU energy strategy in order to support the competitiveness of European industry, to allow an easier and more secure access to energy for the citizens of the Union, and to contribute to the fight against greenhouse gas emmissions.

They expressed their support for low-carbon energy and pointed out that nuclear energy represents an energy source meeting both economic rationale and objectives of the fight against climate change.

France and the Czech Republic also indicated their willingness to promote energy security of the European Union and to strengthen the external dimension of European energy policy in line with the efforts France and the Czech Republic made during their respective EU Presidencies.

Finally, the two countries stressed the importance of promoting the highest standards of nuclear safety in Europe and third countries.

France and the Czech Republic will continue to work together in order to implement this common vision on the European energy policy.
