23 August – European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism

(This article expired 24.08.2014.)

Today we commemorate the victims of crimes committed by totalitarian regimes, dominated by ideologies of Stalinism and Nazism. In 2008, the European Parliament designated the 23 August as the European Day for Victims of Stalinism and Nazism.

The origin of this commemoration is bound to the anniversary of the Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, also known as the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, signed in Moscow on 23rd August 1939.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic regrets that even today, political systems similar to Stalinism and Nazism still exist. It condemns all crimes committed by these regimes and expresses its solidarity with those who struggle for elimination of such crimes and for punishment of all their perpetrators.
