UN Human Rights Council: Czech resolution on equal political participation adopted by consensus

On 26th September, the UN Human Rights Council has unanimously adopted a resolution stressing the importance of equal political participation. This new initiative, which was submitted by the Czech Republic together with a cross-regional core group consisting of Botswana, Indonesia, the Netherlands and Peru, has been cosponsored by 75 UN members states. Following extensive negotiations, the Czech Republic has succeeded in defending its original ambitious text.

Resolution on equal political participation reflects foreign-policy priorities of the Czech Republic and its long-term involvement in support of democratic elections and democratization processes. The resolution confirms the right and the opportunity of every citizen to vote and to be elected by universal and equal suffrage, without unreasonable restrictions, in law or in practice. The Czech Republic urges all states to eliminate barriers that limit full and effective participation of all segments of society, including women or minorities, in political affairs. This new initiative builds upon a joint statement delivered by the Czech Republic on behalf of wide group of countries during the last session of the UN Human Rights Council.
