On 4th March 2007, so called "Parliamentary Elections" took place in Abkhazia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses full support to a peaceful solution of the "frozen conflicts" based on principles of sovereignty and territorial unity of Georgia within internationally agreed borders. These "elections" did not contribute to the solution of the crisis in this region and are in contradiction with the effort to establish political dialogue between involved parties.
The MFA considers the running, organisation and results of the " Parliamentary Elections", as well as bodies formed as a consequence of these elections, as illegitimate. Elections in this region of Georgia can be considered as valid only after a secure and dignified return of all refugees home is ensured.
We call on all parties involved, for respecting the existing
agreements and starting political dialogue aimed at reaching a
peaceful solution of the conflict in Abkhazia.
