Statement of the MFA on the „Elections“ to Local Self-Administrations in Abkhazia

On 11th February 2007, „elections“ to local self-administrations will take place in Abkhazia. According to available information and the development in this region of „frozen conflict“ the MFA fears that these „elections“ will not be democratic and free. This activity is in contradiction with the principles of sovereignty and territorial unity of Georgia and will not contribute to the solution of the crisis in the region.(8/2/2007)

On 11th February 2007, "elections" to local self-administrations will take place in Abkhazia. According to available information and the development in this region of "frozen conflict" the MFA fears that these "elections" will not be democratic and free. This activity is in contradiction with the principles of sovereignty and territorial unity of Georgia and will not contribute to the solution of the crisis in the region.

The Czech Republic supports the sovereignty and territorial unity of Gerogia within internationally agreed borders. The taking place of "elections" to local self-administrations in a region agitated by separationist efforts does not contribute to the effort of the international community aimed at reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict.

We call on all parties involved for respecting the existing agreements and starting a political dialogue in order to reach an effective and transparent solution of the conflict in Abkhazia.
