The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the entry of Bulgaria and Romania into the EU on 1st January 2007 and congratulates the citizens of both countries on the occasion of this historical moment. The Czech Republic has been systematically and in a long-term supporting the entry of both countries into the EU. We see this entry as the accomplishment of the fifth EU enlargment, which included the Czech Republic. The entry of Bulgaria and Romania has a crucial importance for the conclusion of transformation processes inside both countries and for the stabilisation of the south-east Europe region.

The Czech Republic highly appreciates the long-term effort of both countries aimed at reaching the best possible readiness for the entry, provided during the difficult accession period. With regard to the given development the Czech government decided to open the Czech working market for Bulgarian and Romanian citizens from the moment of entry into the EU. The government based its decision on the principle that the free movement of workers is one of the four fundamental freedoms, essential for a proper functioning of the EU internal single market.

The Czech Republic welcomes the successfuly developing relations with both countries and believes that the common EU membership will bring a new quality to these relations.
