Statement of the MFA on the „Suspension of Participation“ in the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty by the Russian Federation

In the night from 12th to 13th December 2007, the Russian Federation, on the basis of its previous decisions and the law signed by President V.V.Putin on 29th November 2007, stoped the fulfiling of its obligations embodied in the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE).(13/12/2007)

In the night from 12th to 13th December 2007, the Russian Federation, on the basis of its previous decisions and the law signed by President V.V.Putin on 29th November 2007, stoped the fulfiling of its obligations embodied in the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE). It means that the Russian Federation is not providing information on the Russian armed forces, is not receiving inspections from signatary countries on its territory and is not sending its own inspections to these countries.

The Czech Republic sincerely regrets that the Russian Federation adopted this unilateral measure, despite of several helpful steps of signatary countries - NATO members in the last period. The current Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe and its adapted version, is a fundamental foundation-stone for building security, confidence and transparency in Europe in the military-political area. The unilateral decision of the Russian Federation, which will surely not contribute to a higher confidence and improved security on the European continent, is fully its own responsibility, as well as the consequences that may result. The Czech Republic together with the other signatary countries, especially NATO members, adhered and is adhering to the letter and spirit of the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe and its version which is to be ratified. The Russian Federation by its decision to stop fulfiling engagements embodied in the Treaty confirmed again its deviation from a cooperative attitude in security issues in the Euro-Atlantic area. The Czech Republic calls on the Russian Federation for the renewal of the implementation of engagements resulting from the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe and of its approach to security issues in Europe according to the principles, values and standards of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
