Statement of the MFA on the Situation in Kenya

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic follows with concern the current development in the Republic of Kenya, where as a result of a problematic running of the December elections, violence, incendiary attacks and plunder is taking place.(7.1.2008)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic follows with concern the current development in the Republic of Kenya, where as a result of a problematic running of the December elections, violence, incendiary attacks and plunder is taking place. The MFA expressed this concern by for instance supporting the common Statement of EU Member States. This statement calls on all parties for starting a dialogue and solving the situation by appropriate legal means and in accordance with universaly recognized democratic principles. This statement also expresses regrets over the loss of lives, condemns all forms of violence and calls on all parties for maximum restraint.

The MFA thanks all Czech citizens and institutions for their interest and concern about the lives of people in Kenya. This solidary pressure of the Czech public is in accordance with our wish for finding a quick political and nonviolent solution of the crisis in Kenya. It is our belief that precisely the common action of EU member states, who have sufficient economic, security and political means, can influence the situation and reach a positive result.
