Statement of the MFA on the Anticipated Presidential Elections in Georgia

The anticipated elections in Georgia, which took place on 5th January 2008, were an important test of democracy and stability in Georgia. These elections were the first really competitive and enabled the people of Georgia to express its political will.(10.1.2008)
The Czech Republic agrees with the preliminary evaluation of international observers, including the OSCE - ODIHR, that the elections were in principle in accordance with the majority of engagements of the OSCE, the Council of Europe and international standards for democratic elections.
The Czech Republic calls on the Government of Georgia for taking all necessary steps to investigate irregularities and to eliminate insufficiencies, identified by international observers. The Czech Republic also calls on all political entities for respecting the results of elections and for participating in a constructive and democratic way in the solving of current problems of the country.
The Czech Republic expresses its full support to the democratisation and Euro-Atlantic orientation of Georgia.
