MFA supports the international initiative for a Syrian chemical-weapons handover

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic closely follows the latest diplomatic developments with regard to the use of chemical agents in Syria on 21 August 2013.

We welcome that due to the broad condemnation of the incident by the international community and diplomatic pressure the government of the Syrian Arab Republic has showed willingness to accept a plan for the dismantlement of chemical weapons in the country. We also welcome the announcement that Syria wants to sign the Convention on the Prohibition of Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction.

In concert with the current international diplomatic effort, the Czech Republic supports the adoption of a clear, effective and legally binding implementation plan by the UN Security Council for the removal of chemical weapons from Syria. In this regard, the Czech Republic calls on the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic to demonstrate the seriousness of its intent.
