Statement of the MFA on the findings of the UN inspection mission to Syria

(This article expired 19.09.2014.)

Based on the findings of the UN inspectors in Syria it has been established that chemical warfare agents were used in Damascus on 21 August 2013. The MFA welcomes the publication of the UN report on Syria. The revelations contained in the UN report are extremely serious. The MFA considers the use of chemical weapons absolutely unacceptable and most deplorable. In this respect, we fully subscribe to today´s statement of the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on the UN inspectors´ report.

The MFA welcomes and supports the Framework Agreement reached between the United States and Russia which should lead to Syrian chemical weapons being secured and handed over under international supervision and subsequently destroyed. We call on the political leadership of the Syrian Arab Republic to respect the conditions and follow through with the implementation of the Framework Agreement, including commitments related to the Syria´s declared intention to adopt the Convention on the Prohibition of Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction. The MFA supports the implementation of the Framework Agreement takes place under provisions of a resolution of the UN Security Council.

The MFA remains convinced that the only  lasting solution to the conflict in Syria can come through diplomatic negotiation.
