Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the developments in Ukraine

(This article expired 03.12.2014.)

Ukraine currently sees massive demonstrations of citizens dissatisfied with the surprising decision of the country’s leadership not to sign the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union at the recent Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius. The Agreement is the result of a many months´ negotiation process and offers Ukraine integration, political association and comprehensive partnership with the Union. The EU Heads of State and Government meeting in Vilnius made it clear that the Association Agreement would remain open for signature.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted with great concern the use of violence on Saturday. Czech foreign service is following closely and analyzing the situation. We noted that President Yanukovych distanced himself from the violence. We hope that his statement was made in earnest and that the government authorities will now act in accordance with the democratic rule of law without resorting again to unacceptable violent methods. Ukraine currently chairs the OSCE. We believe that it will not betray the principles of the Helsinki Final Act and other founding acts of the Organization.

The Czech Republic has always expressed its conviction that Ukraine belongs to the family of European countries. The Czech Republic remains ready to assist Ukraine in every way possible on the path of forging closer links with the Union and building up democracy, as well as in the process of moving ahead with the reforms that will not be easy to accomplish.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon the Ukrainian leadership to resolve the situation by means of a democratic dialogue.
